The shape of the week
You land in Bari on the morning of the 3rd and need to be in Rome the afternoon of the 9th. In between: six nights of Sardinia. Here are two options — pick the vibe, the rest is sorted.
Northeast → Orosei → South. The full island in one gentle north-to-south drive: postcard Costa Smeralda & La Maddalena, a charming overnight in Orosei to break the drive, then the shallow white-sand south + Cagliari coffee.
South only, barely any driving. Settle into one beautiful base, the shallowest beaches for the baby, the island's best specialty coffee in Cagliari, and the best value — no island-crossing drive at all.

Tim & Lisa's Sardinia plan looks unreal — and it is. But it was built for two adults who can hike and sit on a boat all day. Here's the honest swap we're making, and why it's actually better with Gracie.
The famous Gulf of Orosei beaches (Cala Luna, Mariolu, Goloritzé) are stunning — but you reach them by boat or a serious hike, the water drops off deep, and the day-tours run 6–8 hours in full sun. With Gracie you'd mostly be admiring them from a boat, not playing on them. So we still see the dramatic coast (an optional calm-morning boat from Cala Gonone), but we spend our beach days on shallow sandy bays where a 15-month-old can splash safely. Honestly? We probably get more beach time, not less.
Getting there & around
Live fares pulled in late June for early-September dates — prices in AUD per adult, one-way (your girl flies as a lap infant). Book within a week or two; September seats and hire cars tighten fast.

*Light/hand-luggage fares — add checked bags (below). All land at Fiumicino (FCO) as you wanted. The Bari→Olbia direct was verified on the date grid as the cheapest day of the week — it really does fly that Thursday.
Heads-up: no economy fare lets a single bag exceed ~23kg — so pack two bags per adult or trim to 23kg. The pram & car seat fly free on every carrier (gate-checked). On Cagliari→Rome, book ITA's standard Economy (not "Light"): it includes 2×23kg + a free 10kg infant bag, and the lap-infant is free — best value once bags are in. On Volotea (Bari→Olbia) buy bags online (~€40–70 the family); never at the airport (3× the price).
Option 1: one-way — pick up at Olbia airport, drop at Cagliari (~€100 one-way fee, ~€60/day). Option 2: round-trip from Cagliari (no drop fee). Either way, bring your own infant car seat (it flies free and you trust the fit) or reserve one with the car in advance — never leave it to the desk. Olbia→Cagliari is ~260km / 3–3½ hrs total, which Orosei conveniently splits in two.
Northeast → Orosei → South. The whole island in one easy north-to-south arc, finishing on Gracie's-best beaches near Cagliari.
Fly in 16:15, grab the car + car seat, ~35-min drive to San Teodoro. Settle, sunset stroll, easy first dinner of wood-fired pizza & homemade pasta.

La Maddalena — the northeast's crown jewel.
One gorgeous base, the shallowest beaches on the island, the best coffee, the best value — and almost no driving.
Base yourself in Chia (south-west — the shallowest, talc-white beaches, closest to Cagliari coffee) or Villasimius (south-east — sheltered bays, the best baby-kit resort). This day-by-day uses Chia; flip it to Villasimius and the shape is identical.
In by ~14:05, car + seat, ~55-min drive to Chia. Pool, settle, gentle first dinner.

Where to stay
All chosen for a 15-month-old: pools, cots, calm beaches, and (where noted) standout baby kit. Rates are rough early-Sept estimates for the room — confirm live, book early.
Palau. Pine-set family resort by the La Maddalena ferry — baby-food prep, free pushchair hire, cots, big pools, shallow private beach. The one-stop pick if you don't want to move.
San Teodoro. Design resort in a marine reserve, ~1km to La Cinta. Three pools, big grounds, kids' club — Costa Smeralda glamour without Porto Cervo prices.
San Teodoro town. Friendly, great value, heated pool, family rooms, walkable to restaurants, gelato and La Cinta. Easy and unfussy.
Arzachena. Family-owned country resort — olive-shaded pool, Gallura cooking on site, peaceful for naps, ~20 min to Costa Smeralda beaches. Charm + value.
For one night I'd grab an agriturismo or a small seaside hotel near Cala Liberotto / Sos Alinos (just north of Orosei) so you're walking distance to a shallow sandy beach, with the old town a few minutes away for dinner and gelato. Once you pick Option 1, say the word and I'll pin two or three specific places with live prices — I didn't want to fill the page with unverified names.
Villasimius. 5★ on a sheltered private white-sand bay — reputedly the most generous free baby-equipment package on the island; under-2s often stay free. Calm, shallow, walkable beach.
Chia. Sardinian-owned boutique (9.4 on Booking), curving pool, 5-min walk to a stunning shallow unspoilt beach. Calm and lovely — the value-luxury pick.
Chia. Big polished resort between sea and lagoon — five pools incl. a baby pool, shuttle to golden beaches, baby welcome pack, babysitting. Book by 28 Feb for ~30% off.
Santa Margherita di Pula. Authentic farm-stay with an award-winning restaurant. Slow, rural, brilliant food on site — great value (no big pool; confirm cot).
Coffee · pizza · pasta · gelato
Tuned to you two: Melbourne-style coffee where it genuinely exists, proper wood-fired pizza, simple red-sauce pasta & gnocchi, and the island's best gelato.
Real third-wave / flat-white coffee in Sardinia is basically a Cagliari thing (Caffè dell'Arte). Everywhere else it's traditional Italian bars — still lovely, just order a cappuccino in the morning (closest to a flat white) and an espresso/macchiato later. Your best cups of the whole trip are actually in Bari (start) and Rome (finish).
Smooth, well-pulled espresso + great pastries, roomy with a pram. The reliable Olbia morning stop.
Olbia's proper Neapolitan — soft, puffy cornicione, buffalo mozzarella, red sauce. Go ~19:00 for an easy table.

Wood-fired pizza AND homemade pasta, garden seating, fair prices — exactly the casual family dinner near La Cinta.

The Gallura farm dinner to book once — house cured meats, suckling pig over fire, homemade pasta. Rustic and warm. Book a day ahead, ~19:30.
The one true third-wave roaster on the island — espresso, V60, Aeropress, cold brew, proper milk drinks. This is your flat-white fix. Make it the Cagliari ritual.

Cagliari — your coffee & gelato HQ.
Genuine specialty — single-origin, flat whites, Aeropress, fresh pastries. Your Melbourne-approximate cup before the flight.
Casual + fast in Bari Vecchia — classic focaccia barese, panzerotti, panini. Easy with a toddler before you fly.
Rome's original specialty bar — excellent flat whites, filter, fresh croissants. Best Melbourne-style cup in Rome.
Trastevere. Classic Roman pasta (cacio e pepe, amatriciana, plain tomato for bub), high chairs, big outdoor area, colouring pages. Go ~18:30.
Behind Largo Argentina — superb Roman thin-crust from the Roscioli family, family-friendly, very central. Book ahead.
Sand between the toes
All shallow, sandy and calm — the kind where Gracie can sit in 10cm of warm water and be thrilled. Mornings are calmest.
5km of fine white sand, very shallow turquoise, walkable from town, kiosks & sunbeds. The benchmark — no booking needed.
"Little Tahiti" — crystal water stays knee-deep for ages, perfect for a baby. Needs advance booking (€2pp) Jun–Sep; arrive early for parking.
Sheltered, gently sloping coves looking at Tavolara island — close to the airport, ideal day-one or day-trip beach.
The toddler-friendly answer to the boat-only calette — protected pine-backed coves, shallow and sandy. Bidderosa limits cars/day, so arrive early.
Wide talc-white sand, gently shelving turquoise, little lagoons — the south-west's flagship family beach.
Soft sand, shallow entry, pine shade for the midday nap. Quieter than Su Giudeu.
Long shallow crescents backed by the Notteri lagoon (flamingos to point at). Simius is the softest, calmest baby spot.
Postcard turquoise, shallow and sandy — go early or on a weekday as it's popular. Facilities & parking on site.

The damage
Ballpark for the three of you, on the ground in Sardinia (6 nights) — excluding your international flights to/from Italy and any Bari/Rome nights. Hotels shown at a mid "~€250-ish" pick; you can swing it up or down.
≈ A$5,500–6,500. Drop the private boat (do the ferry instead) and it's ~€2,800.
≈ A$4,300–5,200. The cheaper, lower-effort week — no one-way fee, less fuel.
Hotels are the big lever: value picks (Hotel Bonsai, TH Costa Rei) pull the total down ~€600–900; the splurges (Falkensteiner, Conrad, Baglioni) push it up €600–1,500. Conversions at ~€1 = A$1.65.
The fine print that matters
Cala Brandinchi & Lu Impostu (San Teodoro) need an online reservation, €2pp, Jun 1–Sep 30 via the San Teodoro beaches app — book the evening two days prior. Bidderosa (Orosei) caps cars per day — arrive early. Most others are free.
Legally required. Bring your own (flies free, you trust the fit) or reserve one with the booking — never rely on the desk having one. A 15-month-old needs a Group 0+/1 seat.
SUNANDBASS (drum & bass) hits San Teodoro ~Sep 6–16 and the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup is in Porto Cervo ~Sep 7–13. Your window mostly precedes it, and our drive south on the 6th gets you clear — but book San Teodoro early & ask about noise.
Early September is the sweet spot: 28–30°C days, sea ~24–25°C, and crowds thinning fast after the August peak. Still bring beach shade for the baby.
Sardinia fines taking sand/shells/pebbles from beaches — genuinely enforced. Buy the souvenir, leave the beach where it is.
It's ~2 months out in peak-ish season — flights, the better hotels and hire cars all tighten in the final weeks. Lock flights + car + first hotel within a week or two.
You land at Fiumicino early afternoon on the 9th with the whole city ahead. For the first toddler-friendly evening: Faro for a real coffee, Tonnarello in Trastevere (high chairs + colouring pages) or Pizzeria Emma near the centre. Gelato non-negotiable. 🍦
